Water management
Drinking water
The water distribution network of Naples airport is fed by the aqueduct. The quality of drinking water is guaranteed by the water self-control plan, shared with the Health Local Authority. Over the years, GESAC has committed to reduce water consumption through a maintenance plan of the water supply and the installation of special devices in theTerminal that have saved 25% of drinking water, despite the progressive growth of passengers.
Waste water
Waste waters produced by Naples Airport are mainly represented by:
domestic waters discharged to public sewers;
runoff rainwater from aprons discharged to upper soil layers and to the subsoil.
Runoff rainwater from the airport territory is collected through a specific drainage system and treated before being discharged to the soil through draining fields.
GESAC ensures the implementation of the maintenance plan of the network and the monitoring of the quality of discharges through the self-control program that establishes frequencies and sampling modes; the data are then transmitted to the competent Authorities.
Energy
Airports are highly energy-hungry infrastructures. Therefore, consumption reduction is a pivotal issue that is considered by GESAC as an essential factor for the sustainable development of its activities.
GESAC operates according to an Environmental Management System certified in accordance with the UNI EN ISO 14001 standard and, since 2018, has also an Energy Management System certified in accordance with the UNI EN ISO 50001 standard.
Starting from a long energy auditing course, it has been developed an efficiency plan that includes a series of interventions aimed at energy consumption reduction:
- Development of the trigeneration thermal power plant, which will guarantee the partial self-production of electricity, heat and cooling using natural gas and allowing a mixed energy supply: natural gas and electricity
- Replacement of traditional lighting (both in the Terminal and the APRON) with LED lighting
- Implementation of insulation measures to improve the efficiency heating of buildings
- Installation of devices for monitoring and controlling energy consumption
- Activities to promote responsible behaviour to mitigate consumption.
Biodiversity
Naples International Airport has put in place a monitoring and control plan for the wildlifea living in the airport,
Wildlife monitoring foresees a systematic control of the wildlife by recording all useful information concerning species, number, location, etc.
Since 2014, Bird Control Italy srl has developed an annual environmental naturalistic report on the basis of data related to birdstrike events, wildlife monitoring data, mitigation actions and a measure of the wildlife strike risk recorded during the year
Il 09 febbraio del 2022, GESAC ha firmato l’accordo di Buckingham Palace delle United for Wildlife Transport Taskforce a sostegno degli sforzi per prevenire il traffico e il trasporto di fauna selvatica illegale.
On February 09 2022, GESAC signed the Buckingham Palace Agreement of the United for Wildlife Transport Taskforce in support of efforts to prevent wildlife smuggling
Moreover, in line with the European Biodiversity Strategy to 2030, GESAC is conducting an urban forestation program through the planting of tree species of architectural value, effective in reducing greenhouse gases at the same time. The plan provides for the remediation of abandoned urban areas, close to the airport and below the landing and take-off routes, in the municipalities of Naples and Casalnuovo.
The airport forecourt will also be affected by a green re-environment project, complementary to the works planned for the Metro Airport Station opening.
